A Father's Legacy

As Father's Day arrives, we pause to reflect on the people who helped shape our lives.

For some, this reflection centers on a father. For others, it may be a grandfather, stepfather, uncle, mentor, teacher, coach, elder, or community member who offered guidance, support, and care along the way.

In Buddhist practice, we often speak of interdependence—the understanding that none of us arrive where we are alone. Our lives are influenced by countless causes and conditions, including the people who encouraged us, challenged us, protected us, and helped us find our footing in the world.

Many of us carry lessons that were passed down through simple acts:

A strong work ethic.
A love of learning.
Respect for nature.
A commitment to kindness.
The ability to persevere through difficulty.
The courage to begin again.

Sometimes these teachings came through words.

Often they came through example.

As practitioners, we can view Father's Day as an opportunity for gratitude. Gratitude not because those who raised us were perfect, but because every relationship offers lessons that help shape our path.

For those whose relationships with their fathers were complicated or painful, this day may bring mixed emotions. We honor that experience as well. The practice invites us to hold both gratitude and difficulty with compassion, recognizing that healing is also part of the path.

At Three Mountains Sangha, we understand that family takes many forms. We celebrate all who have nurtured, guided, protected, and cared for others. We honor those who continue to show up with patience, generosity, and love.

Today, we offer gratitude for the people who helped us become who we are.

May we remember their gifts.

May we learn from their example.

May we continue the work of caring for one another.

And may we recognize that each of us, through our actions and presence, has the opportunity to become a source of wisdom and support for others.

May all beings be safe.
May all beings be healthy.
May all beings know peace.
